Appreciative students at DFEi use New Large Format Audient Mixing Desk

This academic year at Dun Laoghaire Further Education Institute (DFEi), a full studio upgrade was installed, which included the installation of an Audient ASP8024 Heritage Edition console. This upgrade has already sparked a great deal of interest from students.

Patrick Wall, the course coordinator for the Music and Sound Engineering programmes, explains that “We offer students the opportunity to undertake supervised studio time outside of class hours in order to work on their own projects.” There has been a really great uptake this year, and I am sure that the new console and studio improvements have played a part in that.”

A control room, a main live room, a drum room, and a smaller booth make up the structure of the recording studio. The Audient console, Genelec monitoring, a Mac Mini M1 running ProTools, and an outboard rack with a variety of processors and effects are all located in the control room, which is furnished with an Audient console. According to Patrick, “In addition to the new Audient console, we also installed bespoke studio furniture and a new patchbay in order to integrate our rack gear.”

The price point and the fact that it’s an analogue desk were the initial selling points for the Audient, which came highly recommended by a local company that provides professional audio services known as Big Bear Sound. The instructor of Sound Engineering and Music Technology at DFEi, William Demange, expresses his extreme happiness. It’s functioning extraordinarily well! The work flow has been simplified as a result of all inputs and outputs being routed to the new patchbay.

When asked about the characteristics of the desk that stand out to him, his response is, “Overall, the desk offers a lot of flexibility.” He continues by saying, “Students will find it much simpler to study on this large format desk thanks to the ergonomic design of the console’s layout.” In addition, we value the control features of the DAW as well as the punchy preamps.

According to Patrick, the upgraded studio space at DFEi is being enjoyed by more than just the students who are currently enrolled there. It is interesting to note that we have received a number of visits from former students who are now working in the industry. These visitors were especially impressed by the new console and studio upgrade.

There are currently three class groups using the console: SE5A – Sound Engineering and Music Production with DJ Skills, SE5B – Sound Engineering and Music Production with Live Music Skills, and SE6A – Advanced Sound Engineering and Music Production (students in their second year). As a result, approximately 36 students will be working directly with the desk throughout the course of this academic year. Patrick believes that over the next few years, that number will grow. “We anticipate that our business will continue to expand, as we anticipate that our investment in new technology will attract more students to our courses.”

Fortunately, a large format Audient console always has room for additional students to sit down and use it. You can learn more about DFEi by going to their website or by following them on any one or more of their social media channels, which include Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
